A Girl Who Knew Too Much

I saw people dying in the war,

Heard bullets and explosions.

I saw everything bombarding

And felt my loved ones leave.

Trembling with fear; I hid under my bed

And there I lay wailing in pain:

When suddenly I heard a child screaming

From somewhere above the bed.

Unaware of what lay ahead,

She was calling out to her mother

Saying there was a monster under her bed;

They say "If we are true to ourselves,

We cannot be false to anyone else."

But would I tell that to my younger self?
